Chapter Sixteen – Beckett

We had pizza delivered for dinner and I was glad that, by the time we got ready for bed, Ollie was back to being upbeat, if a little distracted. I couldn’t hold that against him. His pack —his family— had tried to have him kidnapped and dragged back to them kicking and screaming.

For the first time in my life, I was glad that my parents had done me the kindness of abandoning me at a hospital as a baby. I couldn’t imagine growing up with a family who treated me like Ollie’s did him. At least I had known that my foster families were never really mine. I knew they didn’t care because they didn’t have to care. But Ollie’s family? They didn’t value him because of a gift of genetics, something nobody could control.

My inner wolf growled indignantly.

My pups (a word which came far too easily to mind) wouldn’t be treated that way. It didn’t matter if they were born omegas, betas, alphas or completely human: they would know we loved them for who they were.

And I would love my children. I cared too much about their well-being, even while they were nothing more than a pile of cells each, to think otherwise.

Yeah, it was going to take a while to completely get over the shock of getting my boyfriend pregnant, but my wolf was already fully invested. That went a long way towards settling my own nerves somehow. Maybe because my wolf was me and vice versa. I was still getting used to being a shifter, too.

We left Brandi asleep on the futon in the little living room of the cabin where she was quite content to curl up in front of the fireplace, though she had loudly lamented the loss of her clothes and toiletries. Thankfully, she understood there was no way in hell we were going back for her things. At least, not that night. We could reassess in the morning, because I also understood how costly replacing a chunk of one’s wardrobe could be.

As it was, Ollie and I needed to buy new winter coats, as we had abandoned ours when we shifted and ran. With babies on the way, and the likelihood that we would need to leave New York for a while, that kind of cost was not something we could afford to repeat.

In the tiny little bedroom, with its own fireplace crackling away, Ollie curled into me on the Queen bed, nuzzling his head beneath my chin. The light from the flames bounced off his pale skin, making him flicker shades of orange. The timber walls around us were rustic and soothing to my wolf, but it was Ollie’s body pressed tightly against mine which made my anxiety settle.

He smelled so good. Sweet, with a hint of musk. As he shifted, the restless, anxious energy beneath my skin morphed into something else. Something carnal.

We hadn’t had sex since finding out about the babies. That was partially because Ollie seemed constantly exhausted or nauseated, and partially because I had been freaking the fuck out.
